Lipitor May Cause Diabetes in Women

The popular drug known as Lipitor is being claimed to cause diabetes in women who have taken the drug. Lipitor is the brand name for the drugs know as atrovastatin. The St. Louis lipitor lawyerpharmaceutical giant Pfizer is the company marketing and selling the drug Lipitor. If you or a loved one has taken Lipitor and been diagnosed with diabetes, you should contact your medical professional immediately.

It is alleged that Pfizer may have known of the potential for Lipitor to cause Type 2 diabetes. The desire to push the drug on the public is another example of the large pharmaceutical industry trying to place profits ahead of people.

FDA Lipitor Warnings

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning for millions of individuals who are currently taking statins (Lipitor) to prevent heart disease. The FDA is advising individuals and doctors that these drugs:

  • Cognitive problems (brain related problems) have been reported by users. These include memory loss, confusion, and forgetfulness.
  • People using statins may have an increased risk of elevated blood sugar levels and  the development of diabetes (Type 2).
  • Muscle damage may also result due to an interactions with the medication lovastatin.

The FDA is chaining the labels of popular statins to warn people of these newly discovered dangers. These brand include: Lipitor, Crestor, Altoprev, Lescol, Livalo, Mevacor, Pravachol, Zocor, Advicor, Simcor, and Vytorin.

Lipitor May Increase Risk of Diabetes

Diabetes is the result of the bodies inability to either produce or use insulin. Insulin is a hormone required to convert food into energy. The pancreas is responsible for making insulin and if it fails to produce the needed levels, or if the bodies cell’s do not use the insulin in the correct manner, sugar levels in the blood may become too high and result in health problems.

The FDA reports that users of statins such as Lipitor are at an increased risk of elevated blood sugar levels which can result in Type 2 diabetes. Given the fact that Lipitor has been use in the US market since 1996, many users may be at risk.

Lipitor Risk Factors

Individuals who are predisposed to diabetes face the highest risk of developing Type 2 diabetes while using Lipitor. In addition, other risk factors include age, body mass index, and weight. Research is showing that women who have a lower BMI are at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes while using Lipitor. While the reason is not yet known, researchers are rushing to figure out why.
